MONUC hails UN Security Council's measures on sanctions in DRC against individuals and entities
The delegation of the UN Security Council visiting the Great Lakes region of Africa since last Friday arrived yesterday in Entebbe, Uganda where they were due to meet with President Yoweri Museveni. In a press conference held last Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York, the head of the delegation, Ambassador Jean-Marc de la Sablière stated: 'in Uganda, we will raise the humanitarian crisis affecting the northern part of that country and will explore the possibility of stopping the crisis.'

UN Secretary-General Recommends New Reinforcement of MONUC Strength and Extension of its Mandate
'The UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, recommends new reinforcement of MONUC strength to secure the province of Katanga, in anticipation of the upcoming elections,' the Director of Public Information and Spokesperson of MONUC, Mr. Kemal Saiki told the news conference. 'In his last security report, Mr. Annan recommended one year- prolongation of MONUC mandate until 1st October 2006 and further contribution of an additional 2,580 troops, including two helicopter-borne units for the province of Katanga,' said Mr. Saïki, before précising, 'the current MONUC mandate is to expire this Saturday.'

MONUC 'proceeds with sensitisation activities conjointly with the Independent Electoral Commission. Besides, it has stepped up logistic support to CEI,' Rachel Eklou-Assogbavi, MONUC spokesperson told the Mission's weekly press conference.
