Operation « Protection Shield » underway

 

Kinshasa, 23 November 2010 -An operation code named “Protection Shield” has been launched by MONUSCO in the Minembwe, Fizi and Uvira areas in South Kivu Province. The operation is informed by the increased activities of a number of armed groups, including the FRF and FDLR which have been harassing the local population, humanitarian organizations and had even clashed with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, FARDC.

MONUSCO condemns attack on its base at Rwindi (North Kivu)


This attack had to be robustly repulsed


Kinshasa, 25 October 2010 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Roger Meece, condemns in the strongest terms the attack perpetrated on Saturday, October 23rd by armed men on the base of MONUSCO peacekeepers at Rwindi (135 km north of Goma), in North Kivu.

MONUSCO hails the arrest of executive secretary of the Democratic Forces for Liberation of Rwanda


Kinshasa, 13 October 2010 – The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO) welcomes the International Criminal Court’s initiative having led to the arrest of Mr. Calixte Mbarushimana, the executive secretary of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) by French authorities on 11 October last.

Tanker Explosion Victims in Sangue Assisted by MONUSCO


Kinshasa, 3 July 2010 – Yesterday evening, at about 6 o’clock p.m., a tanker carrying fuel from Bukavu to Uvira overturned and exploded near the locality of Sangue, 33 km north Uvira while a crowd of people were attempting to scavenge the fuel. The cause of the explosion has not been established yet.

Arrival of the new Deputy Special Representative for the UN Mission in DR Congo


Kinshasa, February 8, 2010
- The new Deputy Special Representative for the Mission of the United Nations in the DRC, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations and Humanitarian Coordinator Mr.Fidele Sarassoro arrived in Kinshasa to take office on February 7, 2010. Mr. Sarassoro had been nominated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, on December 23, 2009.
