The HIV/AIDS section closely collaborates with the Congolese civil society, National Bodies and Institutions to create awareness and fight against the spread of the HIV/AIDS among the Congolese population and promote the rights of the persons living with HIV/AIDS. The principal activities include:
  • Assistance, when possible, and participation in activities of NGO’s and private organizations working within the field of HIV/AIDS;
  • Integration of HIV/AIDS awareness activities and trainings into outreach projects for vulnerable communities, including students, communities and NGOs;

Installation of 22 information panels on HIV/AIDS in North Kivu


At the beginning of July, the National Multisector Plan in the fight against HIV/AIDS (PNMLS) of North Kivu and MONUC began the installation of information billboards on HIV/AIDs in strategic points, including border zones in Goma in North Kivu province. This project, which was financed by MONUC’s Quick Impact Projects (QIPs), will later be extended to other provincial towns: Butembo, Walikale, Rutshuru, Masisi and Lubero.

WFP launch the HIV/AIDS Prevention project "River of Hope" with MONUC's assistance


The World Food Programme's (WFP) "River of Hope" project, part of the UN Joint Programme "Transporting Hope," completed its first trip on the Congo river from Kinshasa to Mbandaka on 9 March 2009. MONUC’s HIV team sensitized the crews and users of river transport on the threat of HIV and means of prevention for 3 weeks from  25 Febrary to 9 March 2009, traveling through the provinces of Kinshasa, Bandundu and Equateur.
