MONUSCO calls for constructive dialogue to promote peaceful elections

 

Kinshasa, 06 September 2011: The United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) is following closely the progress so far achieved in the electoral process, especially with regard to the submission of presidential and legislative candidate applications at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) candidacy reception and processing offices.

Investigation launched into reported attempt to smuggle cassiterite ore by MONUSCO staff member

 

Kinshasa, 22 August 2011: Congolese authorities yesterday evening thwarted an attempt to smuggle approximately one ton of cassiterite ore from the DRC to Rwanda. The attempt was reportedly made by a national staff member of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), who was stopped in a UN vehicle at the Goma – Gisenyi border crossing point.

United Nations offers support and condolences following Kisangani air crash


Kinshasa, 10 July 2011
: The United Nations in the DRC expresses its solidarity with the Congolese Government and people after the crash on Friday 8 July of a passenger airliner at Kisangani airport. In this regard, the United Nations also wishes to express its condolences to the families of those killed and injured, and to offer within available resources all possible support to the Congolese authorities.

Investigation into mass rapes and other human rights violations in Walikale reveals prevailing lack of accountability

Kinshasa/Geneva, 6 July 2011:
A UN investigation into serious human rights violations perpetrated in Walikale territory, North Kivu, where more than 387 people were raped between 30 July and 2 August last year, reveals continuing lack of accountability, justice and security for victims, according to a report released today.

Kinshasa, 24 June 2011: The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Roger Meece, expresses deep concern over the reports of mass rapes in Fizi Territory, South Kivu, and launches a joint assessment mission to the affected villages as part of the United Nations response to these reports.

MONUSCO Denounces Fraudulent Use of UN Mission and UNSC’s Names


Kinshasa 15 March 2011 - It has been brought to the attention of the United Nations Organization Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, (MONUSCO) that some individuals have been using the name of both the United Nations Security Council and MONUSCO to fraudulently obtain money from mining companies doing business in the Congo.

Roger Meece welcomes verdict in Baraka trial

 

 Kinshasa, 22 February 2011- The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), Roger Meece, today welcomed the guilty verdict by the military tribunal sitting in a mobile open air court in Baraka, and condemning those responsible for acts of rape and other gross human rights abuses perpetrated in Fizi in the night of 1st to 2nd January 2011.
